The Marabu plant (Dichrostachys cinerea) is native to South Africa and was brought to the Caribbean in the 19th century. It was used to feed cattle transported from Africa and sold at ports.
Cleaning the ships, transporting the cattle to the farms ensured the spread of the seeds in Cuba.
The Marabu is a shrub with a strong structure and very rapid growth. Its rapid spread is considered a threat to flora and agriculture in Cuba because it overgrows large amounts of land. This is the reason the government wants to eliminate the Marabu shrub.
The deforestation taking place in Cuba is in line with ecological views and with the protection of the island’s natural biosphere.
Marabu charcoal is traditionally produced by meilers from the branches and trunks of the Marabu bush. Pure pirolysis produces charcoal with a very high calorific value, thus giving rise to its typical characteristics.
