Marabu Charcoal

The Marabu plant (Dichrostachys cinerea) is native to South Africa and was brought to the Caribbean in the 19th century. It was used to feed cattle transported from Africa and sold at ports.

Cleaning the ships, transporting the cattle to the farms ensured the spread of the seeds in Cuba.

The Marabu is a shrub with a strong structure and very rapid growth. Its rapid spread is considered a threat to flora and agriculture in Cuba because it overgrows large amounts of land. This is the reason the government wants to eliminate the Marabu shrub.

The deforestation taking place in Cuba is in line with ecological views and with the protection of the island’s natural biosphere.

Marabu charcoal is traditionally produced by meilers from the branches and trunks of the Marabu bush. Pure pirolysis produces charcoal with a very high calorific value, thus giving rise to its typical characteristics.

Long-term usage

Once it glows, the charcoal guarantees long-term use.

Barely smoke

With the use of charcoal, you have hardly any smoke and no sparks.

Wood hardness

Charcoal is slightly more difficult to light due to hardness of the wood.

Marabu charcoal has the following characteristics;

Instructions for proper use of Marabu charcoal;

  • Fully open the ventilation grills at the bottom. In the case of a bbq or kamado, lift the lid.
  • Cover the bottom with larger pieces of Marabu charcoal with plenty of ventilation space between them.
  • Place 4 woodwool firestarters close together on the charcoal
  • Place another layer of charcoal with plenty of space in between on top of the woodwool and then light the woodwool.
  • When the charcoal glows sufficiently after about 15-20 minutes, the charcoal can be carefully topped up. If necessary, add 2 woodwool firestarters to speed up the process.
  • Always make sure there is plenty of oxygen from both the bottom and top of the charcoal.

White Quebracho ( White Oak ) charcoal is a hard wood native to South America. Its nickname is “cleft axe” because forest workers used to smash their axes on it.
